Drug and Alcohol abuse is a topic being taught in Health and wellness course. Teaching this topic confuses the students at times as they drift in and out of engagement. Having the opportunity to conduct a lab where the students are able to experience with googles what its like to be under the influence or integrating a model of a cigarette demonstrating bodily harm will keep them engaged throughout the lesson.
Making the lesson meaningful and allowing them to move around and explore will create opportunities for them to apply what they see in and outside the community, making connections to real life situations and content taught. This lab and cigarette model will be used at multiple points with different aspects and scenarios, where the students will be able to collaborate with their students and reflect individually on the content topic.
