"Coach, our bodies need to wiggle!" is what I hear nearly every day. I agree! Our systems at school are clearly successful since we went from being a failing school to a level 1 in just 3 years. The scholars I coach work for that title extremely hard each and every day despite the stress, and adversities they face before even entering our school building. I want to show my scholars that I hear them and care about their well-being as much as I do their academic success. This one project would help knock down two chronic obstacles our scholars face: obesity and distraction from learning.
Some of the older grades I coach in PE have been able to verbalize their reasons for misbehaving in class or receiving consequences and most of the time it boils down to: their inability to sit still; their stress/anxiety preventing them from focusing on the lesson. The small portable pedals would be perfect to have in each grade level hallway to step out, take a fast fitness break and jump back in more ready to focus. This would greatly reduce our behavior infractions and build trust and respect between students and the teacher.
In addition, the larger recumbent bike would provide my overweight and obese scholars a low-impact way to safely improve their cardio-fitness, self confidence and comfort with exercise. They could learn how to track their fitness (distance, time, heart rate) and create SMART fitness goals to build that confidence and have a lasting affect on their future health. During times in PE when we are doing FitnessGram (that would otherwise be detrimental to their joints and bones), they would have an alternative mode of accomplishing similar goals as the rest of the class.
