Our school is an ethnically diverse high school with an extremely large population of non-native English speakers. We are part of a large urban school district, and over 85% of our students live below the federal poverty line.
In my English classroom, I serve 50 students who have been unable to, at this point, meet the state proficiency level for writing and reading. We work together to find innovative ways to increase our skills in order to surpass that benchmark, but as you can imagine, it can be stressful at times as my students can not graduate until they meet that goal.
In my Theatre class, I serve over 150 students working together to learn the basics of drama. Many of my students were placed into the class rather than choosing it, but all are doing their best to see success on the stage. This success will impact all areas of their lives as they learn cooperation, creative thinking, and presentation skills.
