I work hard giving my special needs children a good foundation in order to be successful with challenging classroom activities such as handwriting (basic shapes, learning to write their first name) scissor skills, body awareness, puzzles, etc.
Many of my children are impulsive and have brief attention spans. Flexible seating such as the Kore Wobble chairs improve focus, builds core strength, and allows children to integrate movement into table or seated tasks. These are a proven winners in the classroom and extremely beneficial to sensory motor development.
The Abilitations deep pressure sensory vests are used for a variety of reasons and diagnoses. Many children have a medical or educational diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, or Sensory Processing Disorder. The deep pressure vests apply even pressure needed for calming or alerting a child鈥檚 particular sensory system, increases task focus, and decreases sensory seeking behaviors within the classroom.
Many children with sensory motor developmental issues have poor balance and body awareness. Standing on a Bosu (with or without adult support) while throwing and catching a small weighted ball works on a child鈥檚 balance while improving upper body strength, core strength, and postural control. Our current Bosu is almost 8 years old and leaks air.
Kids love Sargent Art-Doh. The dough holds together and has a bit tougher consistency which challenges and strengthens little fingers. The Gator Tweezers are a must for every early classroom. A variety of tongs are used in our classroom for sorting objects and improves finger strength. Crayon rocks are wonderful for young children learning to color. The small size and 鈥渞ock鈥 shape fit perfectly into tiny hands and are perfect for promoting a tripod grasp necessary for efficient coloring and writing. The kids absolutely love these!
