My classroom is located in urban Kansas City, Missouri. Our school serves a primarily minority population with 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Unfortunately, only 3 of my 24 students entered 3rd grade reading on level. Most of my students came in reading at least one grade level behind, with 6 or 7 reading 2 years below. Many students ended 2nd grade very close to grade level, but summer slide caused their level to drop by the time they entered my classroom.
My class is full of hard-working, motivated students who know they are "in the red" and are desperately eager to enter 4th grade on level. However, as they graduate in grade, their success in math, science, and social studies becomes increasingly reliant on strong literacy skills. In reading, we work hard to reteach and build the 1st and 2nd grade comprehension and fluency skills many students missed or failed to master.
