Many of the children who come through my counseling office are dealing with adult-sized challenges like food and housing insecurity, family separations, foster care involvement, and histories of exposure to trauma, crime, and violence. Research shows that these kinds of stressors can affect brain function and actually make it more difficult to learn.
The good news is, trauma can be transformed. When students have a safe, caring environment, supportive relationships, evidence-based prevention programs and interventions, and practice using a range of coping skills, they can not only survive, but thrive.
My students deserve the best opportunities and materials that the world has to offer. Thank you for bringing us that much closer to creating the abundantly resourced school they deserve.
