Flexible seating has been a personal passion for the last 3 school years- no more messy desks, lost supplies, or clutter! In my classroom, we call flexible seating, Self-Directed Learning, and it has proven to be powerful and VERY successful. No two people learn the same way. This classroom environment supports the philosophy of meeting students where they are and everyone getting what they need. I am educating learners that will have jobs that have not eve been created yet- the expectation for students to sit at desks all day is dated and unnecessary.
The materials I selected include soft seats, stability balls, stools, and light shades.
Our current options for flexible seating have been totally found, funded, and (sometimes) creatively invented by me. Having flexible seating choices such as stools, crates, cushions, and pillows has increased my student's sense of pride and community, and their overall productivity. However, kids will be kids and my hodgepodge start-up of seating options are starting to crack, break, and feel old.
