I am a special education teacher who focuses on teaching students about both academics and social norms. There are times when my students will struggle with maintaining their bodies and controlling their emotions. Research has shown that flexible seating helps students to learn about sharing space and making practical choices.
Society places limits on my students, but our classroom is a safe space. The traditional classroom setting is not conducive to learning. Students need to feel comfortable, especially when they struggle to be understood by others. I want to establish a classroom culture that encourages my students to make choices that will help their learning. If one of my students are getting overwhelmed, I want them to know that it is okay for them to grab a stress ball or kick their stretch band when they need a bit of relief. All children fidget, it is the teacher’s responsibility to challenge that energy into a positive experience.
