Second graders are the most fun! They have a great sense of humor and so much personality. The friends that the make this year will often stay with them throughout their lives. They make the journey from beginning readers and novice mathematicians to confident and experienced learners. As a teachers, there is nothing better than seeing how much progress kids make academically and socially this year.
There are a lot of needs in our little community. We have a large immigrant population. Often students are working to become bilingual and biliterate along with mastering second grade skills. In addition, many of our families live well below the poverty line. The struggle to make ends meet is very real and hunger is a frequent visitor in our students' lives. These challenges do not hold my kiddos back, in fact they take those challenges and turn them into assets like grit and resilience. They are truly amazing people!
