Hello, My name is Crystal Giles, and I teach 9th grade. More specifically, I teach 9th graders who struggle with reading. Many people believe it's a lost cause. Many people believe that if they haven't learned to read by 9th grade, it will never happen. Many people truly believe that my class should be a study hall instead of the daunting task of teaching these teenagers how to read. It's too late. It's too hard. It's too much. After all, how do you get a student to read Common Core High School exemplar texts when they are reading on 3-5 grade reading level. Well, the research shows that it CAN be done, but it the only way is through INTENSE reading intervention. That is what I provide, but I am not going to lie, it is hard, it is late in the game, and some days, it is too much. But the rewards can be great! And this is these kids' last chance. I am NOT going to give up on them!
