My students are Title 1 fourth graders that range academically from functioning at a Kindergarten level to fifth grade. I have a predominantly ESL classroom with a few first language English speakers. They have the desire and drive to learn, but they lack exposure to some science concepts that their non-Title 1 peers have the opportunity to experience. They work very hard before school, after school and on Saturdays in an attempt to minimize their academic deficiencies. Year after year my students make tremendous gains but they still have quite a distance to travel to be able to compete with their on grade level peers.
