Teaching kindergarten is sometimes like trying to herd puppies.
Kindergarten kids are loving, cute, and cuddly, but FULL of energy! Asking 5 year olds to sit and focus for longer than 10 or 15 minutes is a lot to ask. I teach 2 sessions of 1/2 day kindergarten and because of our limited amount of time and the academic expectations of Kindergarten students through the state they are asked and required to sit and focus for longer periods of time. Young children need movement to 鈥済et their wiggles out鈥 and stay engaged and focused.
I try very hard to make our classroom fun, inviting, and diverse for the different learning styles without making it too stimulating. I feel that adding flexible seating options will further enhance our learning environment. Some students also love to be in charge of their own choices. Having a few options of flexible seating would give these students a sense of control and choice throughout their day.
