My little first graders come to school every morning with a smile, eager to learn! They come from a variety of backgrounds, with skills ranging from students who can read a short book, to those who can barely write letters. Some come from struggling families, some with single parent homes, and some with little to no parent support. In spite of any challenges they face, these little people show up, ready to work. Work we do! For six and a half hours, these wonderful children stick with difficult tasks, such as blending consonants, writing complete sentences, and adding three numbers.
More impressively, they are navigating the difficult waters of getting along with each other, and becoming a learning community. As a teacher, when I hear my students who have finished their work ask, "Can I help anyone?" I know they are an amazing group!
