I have implemented a classroom economy in my Financial Literacy classes. Students are required to pay monthly rent for their desks, plus electricity bills. To make the payments, they must earn classroom "dollars" by holding down class jobs. They also need to earn bonus cash for good schoolwork and other activities, but they can face fines for unwelcome behavior. They learn to create a budget and save for unexpected expenses. Those who bank more than the amount of their monthly payments can bid in classroom auctions.
The students in this picture created a budget and saved enough class money to purchase the "deed to their desk". Many were not able to buy items in the first monthly auction because they had to save their money. Although it was a sacrifice, they recognized the savings they would have by owning their desks rather than renting. It is great to see them implement wise financial decision-making skills.
