Every day we battle with students who need to focus. They can't focus because of hunger, stress, anxiety, poverty, bullying, etc... Every day we battle with not only getting students attention but keeping it as well. We struggle with their addiction to their phones and other pieces of technology. As a result, students are struggling with basic comprehension skills and understanding science is becoming more difficult for them. Our goal is to show our students that you can love reading in any subject and learn at the same time.
My science teacher and I have chosen to read with our sixth-grade students the novel, Space Case by Stuart Gibbs. They will begin learning about the solar system and I will be teaching about voice, complete sentences, and nouns. We are are creating a collaborative unit around this book that still meets our state standards. In addition, we hope to show our 6th graders that reading and learning can be fun. Stuart Gibbs has several books in this series, and we hope that our students will want to continue to read these books as a result of the first one and learn about space at the same time.
