I teach elementary music for grades K-4 at a Title 1 campus in Houston. My classroom is one of laughter, love and encouragement when trying new things. We focus on fine motor skills (walk to the beat, clap rhythms) all the way up to reading and writing musical compositions, performing on instruments and analyzing music in the world around us. My students are motivated to learn how music can work together with other core subjects (reading, writing, math, science, history, social studies) and excited to connect with one another through song games. Each grade level performs a grade level program a year and 4th graders learn to play recorders. We have a large talent show at the end of the year that showcases all of the talents (music or otherwise) so students are able to build confidence and public speaking/performing skills in a safe space. I teach an after school "pop choir" that meets once a week after school.
