My students display significant difficulties with maintaining attention, appropriate behavior, and learning new academic and social skills in their self-contained classrooms which stems from weaknesses in communication skills. My students benefit from learning through video models and iPad-based interactive language apps and "games" such as "My Playhome", "ActionsinVideo", and "Action Verbs", to teach them skills such as articulation and language skills including but not limited to grammar, prepositions, social skills, listening and reading comprehension, language expansion, and vocabulary.
In my 7 years of experience working with children with Autism and other complex communication needs, I have NEVER seen a child more engaged and more able to learn new communication skills than when given an iPad. My students require many visual supports in order to learn. I spend many hours making language boards with pictures that go along with a story we are reading and other language boards for any activity that they engage in to help them understand the questions I ask and facilitate their ability to respond appropriately, be able to interact in social games and activities with peers, and expand their sentences when communicating.
Because of the high communication needs of my students, I also have an assistant who services the children. We will be sharing this iPad in order to provide more effective speech-language therapy to our students. If my students have the opportunity to utilize iPad apps, I believe that they will be able to learn communication skills much faster because they are more willing to participate which allows for more practice trials and better generalization of communication skills into the classroom environment. There are so many applications for communication that would make a significant impact on these students' ability to learn. Please consider supporting this project in any way you can. Thank you!
