I work with 9th and 10th graders at a Title I high school in Orlando. Almost 20% of them are ESOL and only 22% have books at home over an elementary level. For the past twenty years my goal has been to match students with books they *want* to read, whether that's novels, manga, graphic novels or nonfiction. In addition to fostering a love of reading, it is that very reading practice that gives them skills they need to be successful on their state tests. Without knowing it they are improving their vocabulary, grammar and reading stamina. For my ESOL students especially, having access to books at their level builds the language skills they need to be successful (and I love it when they share their favorite new words).
