Everything I do in my classroom is based on research and best practices for kids. Designing my classroom was not any different. Immediate benefits of flexible seating that my students would experience immediately include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
Kindergarteners need more movement than one 15 minute recess a day, and flexible seating is one way to provide the movement needed to keep them engaged.
Another immediate benefit would be that flexible seating allows students to learning in the environment associated with their individual learning styles. They get to be where they are most comfortable whether that be at the table on a wiggle seat or on the floor stretched out with a desk tray.
