Students at my school love learning about the wonders of mathematics and the intricacies of numbers. The idea that infinity exists between 0 and 1, and not just in the outer reaches of numeracy, astounds and excites them. But they need materials to explore the world around them! I don't have a class set of calculators, which makes it challenging to analyze exponential and quadratic functions in the real world. With this classroom set, my students would be ready to take on complex calculations and engineering challenges.
We ask students to push themselves deeper into the mathematics by making meaning of complex tasks and explaining their thinking to others. We need butcher paper rolls to give students plenty of practice at creating posters and diagrams that show off their intricate mathematical thought.
I also just need some good quality staplers for students to use, and it's frustrating that we live in a world where it's easier to crowd-source them than get them through our school district!
