I teach first grade in a low income district. Half of my students are English Language Learners. Due to overcrowding in my school, my classroom is outside in a trailer. We sit at tables to encourage cooperative learning and language practice. My students try hard and are eager to learn. At the beginning of the year, the English language learners are very quiet and shy. By January, they have blossomed and are excited to talk and participate in class activities. My English speaking students are so helpful and accepting of their classmates' differences. My favorite quote for my classroom is by Horton from Dr. Seuss. "A person is a person no matter how small." I try remember this everyday and instill it in my students.
