Last year, I implemented a weekly walk/jog/run for the entire 3rd grade, and kept track of 100 students' laps by marking tally marks on their hands with a black marker as they ran around the grass field. Following our 30-minute walk/jog/run, I recorded students' laps on a spreadsheet. Students received certificates for their mileage at the end of the year. This motivated some kids to move at a more vigorous pace, but still not enough.
Now, with the implementation of wearable technology, students can track their own steps, setting goals for themselves for each lap, each mile, and each day. This year, I plan to have students wear fitness trackers during our weekly 3rd grade walk/jog/run exercise, so students can self-monitor and increase their daily step count as they track their fitness on the field. These students can also wear the fitness technology at recess, so they can track their steps throughout a whole school day, rather than just during a 30-minute exercise.
