Our school district has adopted a reader's workshop approach to teaching English Language Arts. This is a fantastic way to get students reading many more books and making meaning of these books in an authentic way. The students love being able to read in class and then think about the text and demonstrate their understanding in ways that show their learning yet leave plenty of room for their own thoughts and style. Having a good classroom library with many books is a must for this type of teaching language arts.
Unfortunately, our classroom libraries do not reflect the diversity of our students and they struggle to find books that contain characters who reflect their life experiences and cultures. Also, filling my classroom library shelves is a responsibility that falls on teachers' shoulders. I want to fill my shelves with books that reflect my students' diversity and that will make them want to read more and more!
