I teach math. I require students to show their work - all the time, every time. They use a lot of paper (we recycle!) and need pencils every day. We do use computers and calculators, but they do not replace the pencil and paper work that math requires. We do not have textbooks, so I create and copy many of their work pages. My students' families are barely getting by. I need to help them get the basic supplies other families take for granted. I cannot and will not admonish a student for not having paper and pencil when I'm not sure they had dinner the night before. It seems small, but any stressor I can remove gives my students a better chance of focusing on learning.
