GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition and Design) is a strategy that I am implementing to increase my students vocabulary and comprehension. My 4th grade classroom consists of 26 students from at least 6 different backgrounds; many of them ELL (English Language Learners) with varying second language needs. My students have diverse culture, racial, academic and emotional backgrounds. Many of my students come to school concerned with if they will have a home, food, or power for lights or cooking. Despite these life challenges my students come to school each day smiling, willing and eager to learn. My Title 1 school serves a neighborhood with 98% free and reduced priced lunch. All students deserve every good thing life has to offer including an education with resources to help them succeed.
