My students are responsible and hardworking students who know the importance of a good education. However, they have one thing working against them: poor language skills. My students are mostly English language learners. They consistently score below-average in standardized tests in reading. Their only opportunity to master language and reading skills is in the 6-7 hours they spend in my classroom. They come from low socio-economic households. Many of their parents are illiterate. I have a very important job, and that is to make sure that my students leave my room with the language and reading abilities necessary to be successful later on in life.
