As adults, we know words make a huge difference in a student’s ability to read and write. Words found in books and games help students build vocabulary and add details to writing assignments. I want the students to learn from the classics and from an up-to-date classroom library.
As a student in middle school, my youngest son often struggled with assignments, which required reading and writing because words did not make sense to him. After purchasing books about other students who achieved great things in life and games that he enjoyed, his vocabulary, reading, and speech improved. I firmly believe his increase in the meaning of words helped him become the pharmacist he is today. If these games can help him, they can help others find a love for words as well.
Akeelah and the Bee is an inspiring story of a young girl who overcame her fears and used her strength to help her reach the people in her community through her success in the national spelling bee. The games I want to use in class will help students connect mean of words to the text they are reading within the novel(s).
I cannot wait to see them soar to new heights from theses resources.
Thank you
