My class consist of 17 students with at least 80% receiving free/reduced lunch students. Often my students admit not having age appropriate books at home and rarely are they taken to the library. Most haven't been out of our state and have limited hopes and dreams for their future. They often have witnessed or been victims of some type of violence. Many receive little or no assistance with their homework, and only about half of their parents even come to pick up their report cards during conferences. Yet despite the challenges they face, they are eager to please when you show them that you care and want them to be more than what they see around them.
