These books will help my students see into a world different than their own. My students come from a plethora of life circumstances, but to truly get beyond culture stereotypes, language class needs to offer more than vocabulary and grammar.
Stories communicate values and culture in a way no textbook or slideshow can. In addition to supporting a culture that values literacy, my students can step into a world they cannot experience in regular day-to-day life. Culture is complex and in a good story, students can really see why in addition to what.
In "Esperanza Rising", immigrants get a face and a rationale and a voice. In "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent", the complex balance between clinging to identity and fitting in is explored. With "Tangerine", not only is life as a Latino and Floridian farmer described, but it deals with the universal topics of bullying and family conflict.
