My students are mostly from low-income households where survival is the number one priority. They go to bed hungry more often than not. They're not only hungry for food, they're hungry for love, security and knowledge. Many of my students never held a book or sang the ABCs before they reached Kindergarten. Under these extraordinary circumstances, they struggle daily to conform to school rules and meet high academic expectations. For many of them, the achievement gap is so wide they can barely see the other side. I strive to close that gap so my students can see a better life for themselves. I want to instill in them a love of learning that will empower them to change their world.
