I teach Spanish literacy, social studies, and science to 50 students in a Spanish-English dual language immersion program that started in 2009-2010. Our students will be literate in both languages by 6th grade. Our school is in a culturally and linguistically diverse community with a large Latino population and various other ethnic groups. More than 85% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. This program is composed of 25 students for whom English is their dominant language and 25 students for whom Spanish is their dominant language, but many students are fluent in a third language as well!
Students work with cross-language buddies throughout the year to help develop their oral language and problem-solving skills. We are very excited to support students and families in building strong community and cultural identity, while achieving high levels of academic success!
