With our school starting classes at home this year, it is really important for the direct instruction time to be as informative as possible. My AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, and Accelerated Chemistry classes usually do a lot of group work, labs and activities, modeling, and coloring. This year, students will not have any of those normal learning activities, but many can be modified with a demonstration, done in a Zoom breakout room, or completed with many of the newly available digital resources that have been made available to students.
Regardless of the location and method of learning, science instruction still requires a great deal of one-on-one instruction, which will need to be accomplished in a very short period of time while our school is engaging in distance learning.
Through video conferencing and recording lessons in advance, I will be able to use the drawing tablet to work out mathematical problems, label structure, and color-code diagrams to help students understand both chemical and environmental topics. I can use the phone holders, microphones, and lights to record demonstrations, complete labs, and work with groups to accomplish simple alternate modeling activities; all of which will require me to be hands-free during the lesson.
