I have the privilege of working with 12 primary students with autism. My students have communication, sensory, and learning difficulties. 11/12 students require speech services. About 5 can answer back with 2-3 word sentences.. 7 students have a sight word vocabulary of 10-20 words. They love listening and interacting with stories. 6 students understand object to number relationship and can add facts to 20. They enjoy math puzzles. My classroom has involved and concerned parents. My class had 100% parent participation during report card pick-up. Our school consist of about 400 low income, Hispanic / Afro-American student population. We have K -8 grade classrooms. In addition, there are about 7 Special Education classrooms. We have a new administration this year aimed at building a staff that always learning, consciously collaborating with one another, and achieving our desired goals (results). We also have a parent body actively involved with the school and teachers.
