We want our students to enjoy running! Running is an inexpensive way to increase aerobic physical fitness, that is available to all students. To accomplish this we are designing virtual runs that are completed at the school site over a specified period of time, and designed to meet the individual needs of each student. Designing a running course at our school site that currently does not have a track is key to providing a safe and interactive place to run. We would use funds to purchase cones and marking equipment to delineate our running course for students that can be used during physical education class as well as before school, after school and during breaks. Google classroom will be used to provide students with the history and geography of Hawaii and track student mileage as they virtually travel across the islands. A large scale interactive map will also be built and used to allow students to visualize both whole school and their individual journey. Students will use their pre-test, Presidential Youth Fitness Program (Fitnessgram) score for aerobic capacity to design a personalized running program using the FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type) principal and the running course to improve their aerobic capacity. The goal for students is to set goals to increase their aerobic capacity and reach the Healthy Fitness Zone for aerobic capacity. Our goal as a physical education department is to improve our current rate of 52% of students in the Healthy Fitness Zone for aerobic capacity to 75% this year.
