Music is a rich and beautiful way to connect with students and deepen our bond as humans. Some musical ways the students in my class could bond include: moving and dancing with their favorite recording artists, learning about pianos and musical notes while having fun standing on the keys of a gigantic keyboard, using simple instruments such as a Kalimba, Boomwackers, and Rhythm Sticks to create music beats or to just jam alone or along to various recorded music.
Music is a fun and motivating way to connect with my special students and motivate them while helping them develop useful life skills. So help my class get some musical instruments and make some music!
Hans Christian Anderson once said, 鈥渨here words fail, music speaks.鈥 For many of the special needs children I work with, words fail them daily. Either they can鈥檛 get the words out or can鈥檛 process the words coming in. How maddening it must be to have limited speech skills and yet get bombarded by speech and words all day long. When students who are non-verbal connect with each other in my Music Alternative Class and express themselves without words, the sensations are more powerful and effective than spoken language.
