Our school is an urban, public middle school located in Ohio. While the students feel school is important, they often have a difficult time remaining engaged in school activities due to past failures and a feeling of being disconnected from the value of school. They are excited when they have the opportunity to demonstrate alternate forms of knowledge and creativity outside of the traditional forms of knowledge that are most valued in schools. Most of the students would describe themselves as kinesthetic learners.
The majority of the students have been in the district since kindergarten. Ninety percent of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged. The student body is 75% African American, 18% White and 7% Multi-Racial. Thirty-five percent are students with disabilities.
