Last year, I struggled to teach Algebra where, due to the restrictions of hybrid learning, students were working in isolation and could only submit work via computer. Algebra is already a difficult subject, and it is a gateway to higher level math and science. Many students struggle with abstract concepts needed to solve equations, identify the equation of a line, and manipulate variables. The items in this grant will make sure that my students can learn abstract concepts with hands on, interactive activities.
Imagine students learning about keeping the sides of an equation equal by actually manipulating 2 sides of a balance scale, learning the order of operations by being able to physically sequencing the steps in using pocket charts, and learning about adding, subracting, and multiplying polynomials by manipulating Algebra tiles. Students will also be able to work together and talk to each other about math, so that they can develop their English language at the same time. I can't wait to have a classroom full of active learners working together to tackle key Algebra skills.
