I teach mathematics and coach the Academic Decathlon team for a highly minority student population at a public urban high school. My students come from low-income families, often with parents or guardians who have not studied math beyond Algebra 1. Although most of my students were not born into families that have excelled in academics, they have the capability and desire to learn not only Algebra 1, but courses such as Statistics, Calculus, and Academic Decathlon.
