Children love to move. During class, I notice how much my students move around. When I am walking around checking on their learning, I find myself unable to walk efficiently through because students are moving while they are learning and their traditional chair is in the middle of the floor. I have always told my students to sit, stand, move around or do whatever they need to do to stay focused on the learning. A traditional desk and chair makes this almost impossible.
Flexible seating allows students to move and continue to keep a safe environment in the classroom. My students are 8 and 9 years old. Of course they want to move around while they learn! Personally, I am moving around while I teach, so why should I expect my students to sit perfectly in their chair while they are learning?
With flexible seating, my students will be able to take charge of their learning by sitting, wobbling, wiggling, or bouncing in a way that helps their brain stay focused on what we are doing. My students that choose to stand during class are able to do so and learn in a way that matches their style. My students that need to work on the floor are able to be proactive and get down on the floor to spread out their materials.
Students learn in different ways. Flexible seating will allow them to adhere their bodies to the way they learn, while still keeping our classroom environment safe. Your donation to our classroom will ensure my students have the opportunity to take ownership in their learning and the environment they are learning in.
