Our students generally come from low income households with varying educational backgrounds. They are often easily discouraged when faced with new challenges and benefit from structured groupings. Recycling/re-purposing materials is a way of life in Hawai`i and is second nature to many of our students. We encourage them to engineer solutions using common household items. They love doing hands-on projects and are quick to jump into a new challenge once their confidence is built up through heavily scaffolded tasks of increasing complexity.
