My fourth grade students come from the inner city area of the second largest city in Washington State. The school district serves over 30,000 children and employs around 3,000 teachers. The school population consists of families of which 89% qualify for free and reduced lunches. These are inner city kids with big hopes and dreams of being doctors and big sports stars and teachers too. I am most amazed though at their love to learn and want for excellence. Their hearts are still pure and they gobble up interesting, new ideas and concepts so it is very rewarding to work with these children. Some of the families do not have resources to give their children the "extras" in life but they take their children's education very seriously. Our school has about 350 students and a very active PTA. The staff really cares about the students and makes them feel safe and secure daily.
