As the Lead Teacher of Special Education at Stone Mountain Middle School (SMMS), I am responsible for supervising a department of 115 students with disabilities. SMMS is a Title 1 school comprised of a 97% population from low socioeconomic area. Students are faced daily with educational and behavioral challenges. A positive behavior intervention initiative was recently implemented called Caught Being Good! This initiative was developed to motivate students to come to class prepared, display excellent citizenship, and model student behavior. We seek to create an extrinsic motivational tool that will ultimately develop intrinsic motivation in each student to strive for academic success. Behaviors are the number one impediment to many of our students' progress. By funding this project, it would enhance student engagement, creating a positive learning environment.
