My students learn to tell stories by recounting personal experiences. Throughout the school year they complete amazing projects which become great materials for their storytelling. As a speech-language pathologist, I always try to elicit storytelling by engaging students in hands-on experience they would be motivated to talk about.
My students are very motivated to create a classroom newsletter based on their own classroom experiences and share them with their friends and families. I encourage them to use writing, typing, drawing or symbols to share their stories depending on their current language and literacy skills. The skills learned in producing a newsletter enhance students' language and literacy development in a functional and enjoyable way.
In addition, the newsletter helps to build positive relationship between the parents/guardians and the school by sharing and celebrating successes of our students. I have seen how the meaningful storytelling can positively affect the level of confidence in my students and hope the additional resource will help them grow even more!
