My ninth grade Biology of the Living Earth students begin the year by exploring the connections between the coevolution of Earth's systems and life on Earth. All year long, we build on these connections from a microscale level to macroscale level. By having a multi-level plant growth cart for my students to use, opportunities for a variety of inquiry lab activities throughout the year become a possibility. A few examples of labs we could do with this growth cart include growing plants from seeds to explore factors that affect plant growth, studying the role of bees and other pollinators on plant reproduction, exploring genetics and heritability through growth of Wisconsin Fast Plants, and manipulating variables to affect tropisms and other interesting growth features of plants. A multi-level growth cart like this will provide the space needed for many classes to use simultaneously.
