My students are wonderful kids who unfortunately have not been given all of the opportunities for success that they deserve. My school is a public Title I school with over 50% of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program this year. Our student body is very racially and ethnically diverse. Many of my students come from low-income households and are unable to attend summer camp or other outdoor education programs in which they would foster a strong relationship with the natural world. As a Science teacher, I believe that this connection to nature is vital for the growth of my students as they prepare to become the next generation of environmentally conscious community leaders and scientists.
