Osmo enables the iPad to merge the power of physical play with the digital advantages of real-time feedback. The Osmo game system is an iPad accessory that consists of a stand, a camera attachment, and some specially designed games. It aims to break down the digital barrier with the physical world and teach your kids in a fun way. Playing beyond the screen invites students to collaborate on tables or floors while manipulating tangible game pieces such as number tiles, letter tiles, and coding blocks.
This technology goes beyond worksheets and allows my students to strengthen their cognitive flexibility, spatial reasoning, self correction, hand-to-eye coordination, number sense, self expression and creativity. One of the games is called Words. Words provides on-screen clues to mystery words. Students use letter tiles to spell their answers. Designed to feel like a challenging game, Words is a powerful tool to differentiate instruction. Another game is Numbers. Number Sense fosters understanding of counting, relative values, addition, and multiplication using physical tiles of dots and digits. Tangrams is another game application. It works on spatial reasoning that encourages students to compare, manipulate, and transform geometric pieces to assemble the shapes. These are all activities that students can work on independently, with a partner, or with a small group while the classroom teacher is working with a small group at the back table.
