Room 113 is participating in our school's year long focus on literacy by challenging ourselves to primarily read leveled books so that we can grow our reading levels! Our classroom is home to 23 2nd and 3rd grade students from mixed socioeconomic backgrounds.
Our school is a newly reopened school with a high English Language Learner population. Within our second and third grade classrooms, 17 languages are spoken. I teach students that are refugees, students that are first generation immigrants, and students that have little exposure to English outside of school. 66% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Half of our school population is living in apartments built by the city to house families that have experienced long-term homelessness. Building up academic skills in our most vulnerable population will help provide our students with more opportunities for success as they grow older and smarter!
