I have 22 four and five year old students. This is many students first experience in a structure school setting. Throughout the year, we work not only on academic skills like counting and letter identification, but also social skills like communication and cooperation. We live in a rural area and have many students who receive free/reduced lunches. Students do not have much access to technology at home and are not exposed to many forms of print. At school, we work hard on exposing students to vocabulary through reading ( a lot!), singing, word cards, meaningful conversation, and online literacy programs. By pre-k, students should know 4,000-6,000 words but most of my students do not meet this criteria. I feel so thankful that they are able to come to pre-k (before kindergarten), because we have a developmentally appropriate curriculum and school is still new and exciting. It melts my heart when my students say, "Read it, again!"
