I'm a social worker in a school with a very impoverished population, and with many children who have emotional and medical concerns. Their parents are often overworked and overburdened, with little left to give their kids at the end of a long day. These children crave attention and encouragement, which is what we strive to provide at our school.
My students are bright, imaginative, funny, and creative on most days. But, they also have days of loneliness, bitterness, and despair. They struggle with self esteem and what options they have in their lives, based on what they've witnessed in their neighborhoods. They seek safety and acceptance within the walls of their school. They make me laugh and break my heart on a daily basis, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
