My students are by far my favorite part of teaching. They currently live in the North Lawndale community on Chicago's West Side, one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the city. They are in grades 6th through 8th, and most have an emotional disorder or a learning disability, but that doesn't stop them from giving their all in the classroom.
My students come to school first and foremost to learn in all subject areas. They love hands-on projects and using technology in the classroom. Unfortunately, both are very limited, but we make it work. Not only are my students coming to better their future, but they come to school for the structure and security that is provided in the classroom. They look to their teachers for everything from academics to advice on issues that are greatly affecting their families.
They all bring something different to the classroom, and each one has taught me more than I could ever teach them!
